💁🏻‍♀️You would be amazed what a full time, self employed artist does to keep their art business ticking along...other than the much needed hours it takes to actually paint! ⁣
Marketing takes the most time...getting eyes upon my art is excruciatingly time consuming. If I don’t get 👀👀👀, I don’t get sales. It’s that simple. ⁣
Each day involves some degree of art logistics...dropping off art to framers, galleries, clients, post office, emails, marketing, uploading to my web or archive system, photography, gessoing, varnishing, then to paint! ⁣
Yesterday I painted for 5 hours. Time like this gets carved out of the diary and guarded carefully. ⁣
And yes, there are a lot of staff meetings (with the dog) each day. Pep talks are my favorite! ⁣
‘Come on Mia, you can do this.’⁣
‘Just one more hour’⁣
‘Ignore that phone’⁣
‘Coffee?⁣

Is this taking art passion too far? Loving your own paintings? Never!! I see far too many artists hating on their own work and that saddens me. ⁣

All that time, energy and dedication to learning your craft should, surely, end in a little spark of happiness? ⁣

Be proud of what you create. And if it’s lousy...try and try again. Every brush mark should be a step in the right direction, or at least a lesson to be learnt! ⁣

🔴 Thank you @bluethumbart! Funny story...this one sold the other night at nearly 11pm. I heard the text, got out of bed to check it wasn’t anything important from my girls and went back to bed, pondering if it was an eastern states sale or local. With the time difference to the east, it would have been around 3am and it was sure to get cancelled the next day...a 3am shop is surely with the help of a few too many gins! 😆 Lucky for me, it’s a lovely Perth collector and no gin was consumed in the buying of this artwork. ‘That’s the Spirit’ oil on canvas. Dare I call it done?⁣

This painting has been on and off my easel for months, being put aside for priority paintings, commissions, little projects and out of pure frustration and overwhelm. 😖⁣
⁣
It’s big, 100x100cm and I admit to not planning it out as fully as I should have before undertaking it. I had a basic plan in mind and then kept adding and subtracting from there. ⁣
⁣
Tip for young players and note to self...this is not an efficient way of working realistically in oils. 🙄 A painting of this scale and detail should be more planned. The frustration over composition and positioning of the forms could have been easily done on paper, but it’s not⁣
as simple in oils. ⁣
⁣
Anyway, it’s now heading to the Great Wall of contemplation...stubborn I am and I wouldn’t let it go. ⁣
⁣
It’s called ‘Fair Weather Friends’. Another in my ‘not just a pretty picture’ series. A gentle commentary on introduced species to our native ecology...or just a pretty picture. Your choice! ⁣Glimpses of my illustration days but way bigger.

As a professional artist, I’m pretty good at just getting on with my work day, regardless of lockdowns and the family home with me all day. It’s just unlock that studio and business as usual. My hubby is the same with his work. Same same, different 4 walls. ⁣
⁣
My girls, on the other hand, both 20 somethings, are finding the whole stay home thing more trying. There seems to be a whole lot of doing nothing, with a spurt of energy when they head out for their hour of exercise! ⁣
⁣
Mind you, I think they have needed to slow down and have some ‘smell the roses’ time. Part time jobs, university, boyfriend’s, parties and for my eldest, sailing commitments, mean they rarely do nothing. ⁣
⁣
Yesterday one read a book nearly all day and the other did some gardening. The wonders will never cease! 🥳🥳🥳⁣
How are my UK followers doing? You’ve been in it for the long haul. I feel for anyone doing it tough, on their own (like my mum) or caring for small children. ⁣We have had such normal life until now, with the rest of the world not so lucky. A short lockdown in Perth will hopefully get us out of this strife. Paintbrushes crossed.

25 years ago it was 42 degrees and I married my ❤️. It feels like yesterday, despite now having two adult daughters and a wonderful few decades in between. Glad I have this wedding (or anniversary) card with @lalalandshop, as we are in full lockdown in Perth and I Havnt been to the shops, so this card is as good as it gets. 😉Haha! Whilst there is no dinner out tonight, I’m quite happy to be locked in with my gang. 25 years? How can this be!

Life is officially on hold in Perth, we are in a full lock down for the first time in over ten months. Lucky for me, my studio is fully stocked with canvas and works in progress. With little to do except paint, it’s not a bad way to stay at home. It was during our last lockdown, nearly a year ago, that I started my #imaginativerealism series. Here is the latest one! Fresh off the easel, with some tweaking yet to be done!

I absolutely love being a part of this regional gallery, having spent many school holidays in Kojunup as a child. Ah yes. ⁣ It’s so easy to get side tracked and

Ah yes. ⁣
It’s so easy to get side tracked and locked into comparison mode when there are so many incredible artists and creatives that flood our social media each day.⁣
But the simple act of just focusing on what gives you that spark, that drive to stand in front of an easel each day, the fearlessness to put your art out there, is where the power is. ⁣
Shut down the voices that say it’s not good enough, not the right subject, brush marks or colours and let the 🔥 within be the guide. ⁣
Believe me, I make battle with doubt daily, but the passion is stronger than the storms that try and blow it out. ⁣
Go forth and create! ⁣
